I shot this buck the day after Thanksgiving...My Son and I were hunting a spot together from different sides of a cedar thicket...we figured that with the wind blowing the way it was one of us would get a shot at one of the bucks we had been scouting...the rut was about over...so most does had been herded by dominant bucks...I had about 6-8 does and a few lesser bucks around...and kept seeing this really nice one coming in and out of site...but he was definitely being a bit weary since the sun was already up...I had a small 6 point around me...he was trailing the herd ...I grunted to him to get him to come by me...that is all it took to get the big boys attention...he thought someone was trying to get his does...first came the 6 pt...then a few does... then came the 10 point...I was afraid that the ones in front would scent me...but the wind stayed right...he came in line right behind the others...I put my sight pin about 8 inches behind his shoulder...he was slightly quartering away...arrow hit just right...the buck really did not know what hit him...but the does heard the sound of the whack and took off...he followed them ...I kept sight of him across the abandoned farm field...then lost sight...I made a reference point on a group of trees next to a creek ...after waiting for a half hour I climbed down of my stand and picked up the blood trail...of course I saw him at that last spot so I went straight there...but could not find any blood...I was a bit worried...but I heard a voice in the woods..."are you looking for that whopper"?...I at first did not really understand...then again..."He's over here"...then I saw another bowhunter pointing to me at a cluster of roots of a huge sycamore tree along the river shore...evidently the buck got to the creek...was bleeding profusely ...then fell over into the water...the current drifted him into the root cluster...his rack got caught in them and caused him to get pulled under...when I got to him all that was visible was a patch of brown fur the size of a plate...had it not been for the bowhunting brother this story might have a different ending...I managed to crawl around through the root tangle...but could have used my snorkle and mask...he was really tangled up underwater...I got him out and called my son on the radio...I think he was happier than me...my first Pope & Young Buck...he measured 135points w/ a 1/2 " deduction...a pretty perfect 10 point...my thanks again to the bro that helped me find him...he saw it all go down from his tree stand...his honesty & my Sons hard scouting made my hunt a dream come true...here are a few pics...bowhunting & spearfishinbg are so similar...but dragging a 200 pound deer is a bit harder than swimming w/ a big fish !!!
all the best...ted
